The States of Food

by Amanda

Remember those awful chain e-mails your friends always forwarded to you? I hated them. Actually, I probably loved them when I got my first e-mail address at age 8 (smiley89@aol.com) since I loved having anything in my inbox at that stage of my life. Seriously, what other e-mail would an 8-year-old get? Thirteen years and multiple inboxes later, I’m not asking for more electronic correspondence. Still, I do enjoy the rare personal e-mail from a friend that directs you to a link, story, picture she thought you may be interested in seeing. My sister sent me one of those e-mails this week, and my first instinct was to forward it to all of my interested friends. But then I decided blogging about it would be better.

I kind of wish frozen custard was Missouri’s food instead of toasted ravioli, but that’s because I only have a mild appreciation for Italian food, and I love Ted Drewes. As for Illinois, I’m not surprised it’s deep dish pizza. That stuff is legend here.

Does the map represent your state’s food well? And will someone from South Dakota explain what chislic is?

  1. It sometimes annoys me that everyone thinks Chicago is the only city in Illinois! haha

Toasted Ravs are OK. We made really good ones at home haha. I like the concretes and gooey butter cake better :)

And I think Michigan should have been the apple or the cherry, not a pastie. Hardly anyone outside of the Upper Peninsula eats them!

  2. I’ve been an Iowa girl most of my life and am a little
bummed that they represented the state with loose meat sandwiches!
There is so much more to offer!

  3. Welll..I lived in TN and AL and I’m not seeing how they’re tomatoes and cornbred respectively. Myabe reversed..I’ve eaten a heck of a lot more cornbread in TN and tomatoes in AL lmho

  4. I see that MI is the pastie, but honestly not many people except the yuppers eat them. :) i agree with the above commenter…apples are the best here!

  5. I can deal with grapes. I wouldn’t mind being in Mississippi though! Mud pie :)

  6. Hah, yes Ben & Jerry’s represents Vermont well, but so does maple syrup, which is New Hampshire’s food. This is so weird, but my email when I was like 10 was so similar – it was smileylf@aol.com.

  7. lol this is too funny! Yeah, im from NJ and an Italian sub is definitely something that represents the state

  8. Hello, fellow Missourian! I’m in Kansas City, whereabouts are you?
Just ran across your blog and this picture – really interesting. And…kind of sad, heh.

  9. I went to school in Missouri (Truman State) and everyone
who was from STL used to brag about how they invented toasted
ravioli… And the soda vs pop debates never ended LOL! :-) But
yes, I think that BBQ is very fitting for Kansas although its more
    of a KC thing.

  10. Hmmm, a Denver omelet, huh? I suppose that fits. I’m not a huge fan of eggs – but I guess I would say it is Colorado’s “thing” – that’s such a fun map to look at! :-)

  11. I am chowder and coffee milk. I guess that’s pretty accurate even though I haven’t eaten either. I’m a rebel.

  12. I am from Tennessee and I love tomatoes so I was glad to see that tomatoes was listed for us. This is really neat thanks for sharing.

  13. I’m from Kansas and I’ve honestly never heard of ‘wet barbeque” but I do know that we have some good BBQ in Kansas City. It’s seriously delicious!

  14. Mn is fried food on a stick? I mean, that’s what the state fair has yearly- coming up with something new and fried- but we don’t all walk around with a corndog in hand. I’m surprised a hot dish, juicy lucy, or lutefisk didn’t make it as the state’s food.

  15. Pretty excellent post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have very enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I will be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write-up again soon.
