My Crave List: Cookbooks

by Amanda

Remember how I recently shared that I broke my right wrist three years ago? Ironically, a few days after I wrote that post, I found out I broke a bone in my right hand from another fall. So, my dominant hand is back in a cast for 4-6 weeks. This time the cast is purple. To comfort myself, I splurged on some non-dairy frozen dessert. I also have spent too much time thumbing through my cookbooks, longing for the time when I can afford to get my right hand dirty again. And just because I like to tease myself, I have found even more cookbooks I would like to add to my collection.

Radically Simple

Radically Simple: Brilliant Flavors with Breathtaking Ease by Rozanne Gold

Things I look for in recipes: easy-to-follow directions, simple and minimal ingredients, great flavor combinations. Check, check and check.

Twain's Feast

Twain’s Feast: Searching for America’s Lost Foods in the Footsteps of Samuel Clemens by Andrew Beahrs

Not a true cookbook but definitely a cooking inspiration book, this one just perpetuates my obsession with the man from MO.

Chicago Diner

The Chicago Diner Cookbook by Jo A. Kaucher

I finally went to this famous meat-free restaurant last weekend, and it was just as good as I hoped. Now, I want to eat there all the time, and this cookbook could help satisfy my cravings.

What other cookbooks should I add to my list?

My Crave List: Christmas Wishes

by Amanda

How could I not do a Crave List for the holidays? It’s the one time of year–aside from a birthday–when people actually make a list of things they want. The following items actually did not appear on my wish list this year. I had more practical needs to fulfill as graduation looms, and I begin to need “real people” stuff. Still, I hope you enjoy the following gift ideas!

Calphalon® Tri-Ply Copper 10-Piece Cookware Set with Double Bonus ($449.95) from Crate and Barrel

Don’t we all dream of owning $450 cookware?

Martha Stewart Collection Glassware, Set of 4 Arch Black Wine Glasses (Reg. $40.00, Sale $27.99) from Macy’s

I already have four wine glasses, but these black ones are too cool. They’re also a nice way to hide how much–or little–you’re drinking.

Christmas Collection cupcakes ($29.00) from Georgetown Cupcakes

This makes me want to throw a holiday party just so I can display these cupcakes. Flavors include Rudolph Red Velvet, Chocolate Peppermint, White Chocolate Peppermint, Coconut, Cinnamon, Salted Caramel, Lava Fudge, Red Mitten Vanilla, Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate Eggnog, Gingerbread, Chocolate Chip.

What foodie products are on your wish list this December?

My Crave List: Thanksgiving Gadgets

by Amanda

I was just given the go-ahead to take the reins for our family’s Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a job I begged for am honored to do. Even though it’s still a few weeks away, I am already in full-on planning mode and making lists on every piece of scrap paper I can find during the day. I’m also spending entirely way too much time looking at Thanksgiving cooking tools…and then convincing myself I need them.

Taylor Digital Scale & Measuring Cup ($39.95) from Williams-Sonoma

You can’t ever be too precise when taking on Thanksgiving dinner.

Pie Gate ($5.95) by Sur La Table

1) It’s named “Pie Gate.” 2) Don’t you hate when the pie guts spill into the middle after a slice gets cut?

foodpod ($15.00) by fusionbrands

No renegade food with this crazy capsule. Now that’s something to be thankful for.

Alright, I need Thanksgiving meal planning advice. Favorite recipes? Rookie mistakes I should avoid making?

My Crave List: Drink (and Eat) Pink

by Amanda

I hate buying bottled water. Not only do I think it’s bad for the environment, but also I think it’s just a waste of money. The only bottled water I feel good about buying is Ethos Water at Starbucks because some of the money I’m spending is going to a good cause. I tend to gravitate toward products that give some of the profits to organizations in need. I’m sure I’m not the only one. So, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I have found a few foods you should feel good about eating.

Pink Poetry Smoothie from Odwalla

Plum, dark sweet cherry, guava and other juices are blended with hibiscus, cranberry and green tea extracts, along with Vitamin C and E, as well as Calcium and Iron–two important things women don’t get enough of in their diet! The Superfood drink was made to increase awareness of breast cancer, and Odwalla is donating $250,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

LUXE MILK Chocolate from Ghiradelli

LUXE MILK, Ghirardelli’s all natural premium milk chocolate line, is trying to raise up to $100,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Whenever you purchase a specially marked pink bar or bag of LUXE MILK, you will receive a unique prize code. When you enter your prize code ad www.ghirardelli.com/LuxeMilk, $1 will be donated to the NBCF.

Pink Ribbon Bagel from Panera

Cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, plus vanilla, honey and brown sugar are baked in the signature breast cancer ribbon shape. For each Pink Ribbon bagel sold during the month of October, Panera Bread will donate a portion of proceeds to benefit breast cancer charities.

A special shout-out to my two roommates who inspired this post. They’re both members of Zeta Tau Alpha, a national sorority whose philanthropy focus is breast cancer education and awareness.

What foods do you like that donate money to causes and organizations in need?

My Crave List: A Tea Kettle

by Amanda

Every week, I plan to highlight some fun foodie product I think I need. And when I say need, I mean I’m-doing-okay-without-it-but-when-I-have-the-space-and-money-I-would-like-this…very much.

This week? Tea kettles! I currently use the microwave more than I like, and it doesn’t even do a good job at keeping the water warm when I’m taking my time sipping my tea. And my coffee maker always lets stray coffee grounds infiltrate the pot when I’m only trying to brew hot water. Luckily, my roommate lets me use her single-cup Keurig when I’m hot for tea. Still, it would be nice to make a big pot of tea how tea was intended to be made.

Enter in my top contenders for my dream kettle:

Teavana Alasdair Glass Tea Kettle ($39.95) from Teavana

Do you think I can convince people it’s invisible?

Kohl'sBonJour Stainless Steel Teakettle ($69.99) from Kohl’s

Oo la la! I feel like this tea kettle could be stylish in any place or time.

Giraffe tea kettleGiraffe Whistling Tea Kettle ($36.95) from Supreme Housewares via Amazon.com

Okay. I know I’m supposed to be transitioning into adulthood, but I really, really want this one.

Do you have a tea kettle? What other ones should have made the list?
